Thermal Fluctuations in Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics
Thermal fluctuations in fluids and fluid mixtures in stationary nonequilibrium states are spatially long ranged. This long-ranged nature of the non-equilibrium fluctuations is caused by a coupling between hydrodynamic modes through the non-equilibrium fluxes or gradients. The phenomena are discussed with some illustrative examples in fluids and fluid mixtures.

Diffusion and thermal diffusion processes in a liquid mixture are accompanied by long-range non-equilibrium fluctuations, whose amplitude is orders of magnitude larger than that of equilibrium fluctuations. The mean-square amplitude of the non-equilibrium fluctuations presents a scale-free power law behavior q-4 as a function of the wave vector q, but the divergence of the amplitude of the fluc...
متن کاملDynamic scaling for the growth of non-equilibrium fluctuations during thermophoretic diffusion in microgravity
Diffusion processes are widespread in biological and chemical systems, where they play a fundamental role in the exchange of substances at the cellular level and in determining the rate of chemical reactions. Recently, the classical picture that portrays diffusion as random uncorrelated motion of molecules has been revised, when it was shown that giant non-equilibrium fluctuations develop durin...
متن کاملNon-linear Hydrodynamic Fluctuations around Equilibrium
We formulate a scheme describing the fluctuations in a system obeying the non-linear hydrodynamic equations. The random fluxes are assumed to be Gaussian processes with white noise. It is shown that the usual expressions for the systematic parts of the dissipative fluxes are consistent with this assumption, provided that the Onsager coefficients are constants. The linear response of the system ...

The results of mechanical measurements on single cultured epithelial cells using both magnetic twisting cytometry (MTC) and laser tracking microrheology (LTM) are described. Our unique approach uses laser deflection for high-performance tracking of cell-adhered magnetic beads either in response to an oscillatory magnetic torque (MTC) or due to random Brownian or ATP-dependent forces (LTM). This...
